Etterbeek: fifty people evacuated after suspicious package found

Fifty people were evacuated in Etterbeek on Wednesday morning after a suspicious suitcase was found in Rue de l'Orient, near the Notre-Dame Immaculée church. The area was cordoned off for safety reasons and the evacuees were sent to safety in a community hall on Chaussée de Wavre. The Ordnance Disposal Services (SEDEE) was expected to arrive on the scene, said spokesperson for the municipality of Etterbeek, Philippe Verreye.

Notre-Dame Immaculée church authorities discovered the abandoned suitcase against the wall of the church, located n°20 Rue de l'Orient in Etterbeek, at around to 9:30am. They notified the police, who then cordoned off the area between Rue Gray and Rue Theux.

The Rue de l'Orient inhabitants and people in the shops and businesses in that area were evacuated to a community hall on Chaussée de Wavre.
