After the piece by Arne Quinze in Mons was taken down, it was time to talk compensation. The management committee of the Mons 2015 Foundation has advised its administration council to ask for the construction of a new piece. It prefers this to a legal battle. “The Passenger”, an urban structure, was taken down on Sunday. There were many reactions, notably from Mons politicians, about the amount of money paid for the Flemish artist’s piece. It was taken down for security reasons.
The Administration council of the Mons 2015 Foundation will meet on the 21st of January. Before that, the Foundation’s management committee will meet on Wednesday to discuss the different ways to get compensation. The budget for “The Passenger” was 400,000 euros, paid to the artist.
“After analyzing both legal and financial elements, the management committee considers the Foundation can claim compensation for the cost of this piece”, the Foundation said in a press release. The management committee has taken into the account the artist’s declaration that he will “cover the costs and give compensation”, and make himself “available to the Foundation to resolve the situation”.
One of the possible solutions could be that the artist gives back the money he was paid. Another could be to ask Arne Quinze to make a new piece for Mons 2015. The management committee offered the second solution to the Administration council on Wednesday, “rather than a legal battle which would be long and expensive”.
