Belgian customs, suffering from lack of equipment, receives more

The Finances SPF (Services Publics Fédéraux) told the Belga agency that Belgian Customs recently received 24 extra bullet proof vests. The current 565 armed service Customs workers are now all equipped with them. Customs workers had been demonstrating recently, especially after the alert level was raised due to concerns about terrorist attacks. They were unhappy about the lack of bullet-proof equipment. The 50 new armed service Customs workers, who should join the current 565 between March and July, will now also have bullet-proof vests. The Finances SPF added there are still measures to be put in place for them.

On Thursday, Aimé Truyens, from the socialist public services syndicate ACOD (the Flemish equivalent of the CGSP) said he hoped the new vests were just the first step to rectifying the lack of uniform. “Many members of staff who recently arrived do not have a complete uniform”, he said.
