Terrorist threat - three suspects arrested in Harelbeke

Three people were arrested in Harelbekke on the night between Monday and Tuesday this week, in connection to investigations into the current terrorist threat, said the West Flanders division of Courtrai Prosecutor’s Office, confirming a story run by Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper. The Public Prosecutor’s office did not elaborate further on the identity of the suspects or the circumstances of their arrest. It also did not confirm reports of weapons having been found at one of the individuals’ home or of them belonging to the Islamic state terrorist group.

It is known that three people from the region, both from Courtrai and Menen, have travelled to Syria to join the fight there. They have been deleted from the relevant population registers and two of them have made threats towards Belgium in recent weeks.
