Police forces and customs agencies in France and the Benelux organised a joint operation to curb narcotics trafficking and drug tourism which lasted from Thursday, January 29th to Sunday, February 1st. In Belgium 10 people were arrested and charged and 3 vehicles seized. Of the 1,159 people spot-checked in Belgium, 69 were found to be in possession of drugs, according to results published by Belgian federal police on Monday. In total 181 police men and women took part in these police checks in Belgium. During the operation, federal and local police caught a man between Antwerp and Malines with over 600 grams of cannabis. This individual was brought before Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. Near Antwerp, the federal highway patrol department seized 232 cannabis seedlings and 50 grams of cocaine from 2 individuals from La Louviere.
During the cross-border operation, police and customs forces seized 1.12 kilos of marijuana and approximately 100 grams of hashish in Belgium.
Spot-checks took place along the major through-roads between Rotterdam-Roosendaal-Antwerp-Paris and between Maastricht-Liege-Luxemburg-Metz, along international and provincial highways, aboard trains, as well as in buildings special police forces know to be narcotics dens.
