Nearly 9,000 drivers tested positive during the BOB campaign

During the 2014-2015 Bob campaign, 8,994 drivers (2.8%) tested positive for alcohol. This is less than last year, when 3,2% of motorists tested positive. It is the smallest percentage of positive drivers since the BOB campaigns started, the Belgian Institute for Road Safety (Institut Belge pour la Security Routière, IBSR) said on Wednesday.

In total, 321,156 people were tested, which is the second best result ever. It’s slightly less than last year (342,547 in 2013-2014), but the initial objective of testing 250,000 drivers was achieved.

“A worrying trend remains the amount of positive drivers with an alcohol level higher than 0.8%, which was double the amount between 0.5% and 0.8%”, said the IBSR.

The biggest number of tests was done in the Antwerp province (24%). It was followed by Eastern Flanders, the Flemish Brabant, and Western Flanders. Antwerp’s percentage of positive drivers was largely below the average.

On the other hand, the number of positive drivers was largely above the average in Hainaut and the Walloon Brabant province, where the risk of being tested was lower.
