Acid attack at Delhaize – the victim will probably recover her sight

The cleaner at the Antwerp Delhaize supermarket who was attacked with acid last Friday will probably recover good vision in her left eye. Her husband made the announcement on Thursday evening over Facebook. The 52 year old victim underwent several operations on Thursday, but is still in an artificial coma. She should regain consciousness over the next few days. Doctors will only be able to tell if there has been any permanent damage when she wakes up. According to one doctor, the risk of her losing all the sight in her left eye is small, so the victim should recover her sight. Further operations are planned, notably on her arms and neck.

The 52 year old was attacked with acid last Friday, while she was walking into the supermarket for her shift. She was seriously hurt and burned, and her life was in danger.

Police are still looking for the attacker.

Last December, the Delhaize supermarket chain received two anonymous threatening emails, which spoke of acid attacks against their customers. These were emails also sent to the Belga agency. Security measures have been reinforced in all the group’s supermarkets.
