22-year-old from Edegem intercepted on journey to Syria

A 22-year-old man from Edegem (municipality of Antwerp), most likely on his way to Syria, has been intercepted by Turkish authorities and sent back home. On arrival in Belgium, he was immediately arrested by Antwerp Federal Judicial Police and placed under arrest. Antwerp Council Chamber  has now confirmed his arrest warrant, said the Federal Prosecutor's office on Friday, confirming a report published in Het Nieuwsblad and Gazet van Antwerpen.

22-year-old T. Thomas, 22, of mixed Asian and South African origin allegedly converted to Islam a few years ago and has since become radicalised. It appears the young man left for Turkey in early March, where he was arrested by the authorities on suspicion of wanting to reach Syria.  Turkish police put him on a plane to Charleroi, where investigators of Antwerp Federal Judicial Police were waiting for him.
