Record number of Belgians with a second home

Last year, 380,000 Belgians (7.8%) had a second home, a new record. After the economic crisis of 2008-2009, the number of Belgians with a second home went from 370,000 in 2008 to 350,000 in 2012, L’Echo reported on Thursday. “Over the last two years, 30,000 more people got second homes”, says Rik De Keyser, Administrator Director of WES Research and Strategy. The increase only concerns second homes abroad. The figures went from 95,000 in 2000 to 140,000 in 2012. It went up by 30,000 over the last two years.

The number of second homes in Belgium didn’t change much over the same period.

Abroad, France remains the place where Belgians have the most second homes (50,000 to 55,000), but the increase is largely due to Spain, where the number doubled in the same period (15,000 to 30,000).
