Monseigneur Leonard calls the 25th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion a “tragedy”

“We need to address a tragedy today. The day before yesterday, it was the 25th anniversary of the Belgian law legalising abortion”, said Monseigneur André Joseph-Leonard, the Belgian primat. He said these words during his Easter homily on Sunday morning, at the Saints-Michel-et-Gudule cathedral in Brussels. “It is difficult to estimate the number of children aborted in Belgium since 1990: in any case, it’s more than 300,000, said Monseigneur Leonard. “They are victims who cannot defend themselves. The small child in the womb can try, for a little while, to hide in the womb’s lining, to try and escape the attack. But always in vain. They will soon just be biological waste”, said the Belgian primat. He also described King Baudouin’s refusal to pass the law as “prophetic”.

“Let us not forget that above we were all once that tiny embryo, that foetus in the womb. We are all here today because we were respected in this vulnerable stage of our life”, added Monseigneur Leonard. He said he “wanted to defend both the precious life of the unborn child and the dignity of each woman”. The archbishop of Malines- Brussels also said he was “committed to supporting organisations that help women to keep their child, including in very difficult situations”.

Along with Pope Francis, Monseigneur Leonard is also worried about Christians in the Far East, who are “persecuted and martyred due to their faith in Christ”.
