Belgium’s oldest person dies aged 110

Anna De Guchtenaere, the oldest person in Belgium, passed away on Monday evening at the Zwijnaarde (Ghent) care home she had been living in. It was confirmed by the staff there. Anna De Guchtenaere, born on the 10th of April 1904 in Ledeberg, died a few days before her 111th birthday.

She was honoured by the Ghent College of Aldermen last year, on her 110th birthday. At the time, the head nurse at her home said she took just a single pill every day. She still regularly spoke English, as her parents fled to Great-Britain during the First World War.

Anna De Guchtanaere studied at the Conservatory, and accompanied films with her violin when they were still mute. After speaking films came out, she worked as a secretary.

Her son and daughter gave her 5 grand-children, who now have descendants themselves.
