Elke Sleurs wants better care for rape victims

A new project for a plan to fight sexual violence is ready, according to the cabinet of Elke Sleurs, the State Secretary for Equal chances. The aim is to increase the number of rapes reported, Le Soir says on Wednesday. It was quoting De Standaard. According to studies, 90% of rape victims don’t report it. To encourage victims to report their attacks, Elke Sleurs (trained as a gynecologist) has drawn up a number of measures, among which is the introduction of a psychological support team.

“A doctor or police officer isn’t enough. We want to offer psychological help”, says Elke Sleurs’ cabinet. The team would be highly trained.

The State Secretary is interested in examples from abroad: “specialist” centres for rape victims within hospitals. The plan is just a project at this stage. A consultation with members of the government on the subject  should take place over the next few weeks.
