The Federal Mediator has opened an investigation into the Foreigner’s office. This is due to the handling of visa applications based on medical reasons, the Het Nieuwsblad said on Thursday. The number of visa applications for medical reasons received by the Foreigner’s office has shot up over the last few years. But there has been a wave of complaints about long waiting times and mishandled applications. The Federal Mediator has decided to investigate. “Over the last three years, we have noticed practices within the administration that require extra attention”, says Pierre Charlot, from the Federal Mediator. “Citizens have told us of recurrent problems. This is why we have decided to do a structural investigation”.
The audit will look at regularisations and requests for temporary medical visas. The investigation should be finished by the end of the year.
