Death of baby in Ixelles: mother taken into custody

The mother of the 4-month-old baby found dead last Thursday on Ixelles' Rue du Serpentin, is due to appear before the Council Chamber on Friday, announced Brussels Public Prosecutor's office on Thursday. The Council Chamber will decide whether to extend her custody or not. The daily La Dernière Heure (DH) announced on Thursday that the baby boy's mother had two separate arrest warrants filed against her, one for harassment and assault on the father of the child, and the second for the baby's murder. According to DH, the father went to the police station last Thursday and reported that his wife had killed their child, apparently because  the man had left his wife for another woman.

Both the child's parents were released after the hearing, the same day the baby died, pending the autopsy results. The newspaper claims that the mother went on to assault the father after they were released.  According to DH, the autopsy revealed that the baby had died from asphyxiation, following which, the mother retracted her statement. In her first statement, she explained that she had held the child against her body until it suffocated.

For the time being, the investigating judge has declined to confirm or deny this information.
