Bailiffs will collect judicial fines in Belgium

Bailiffs will collect judicial fines in Belgium

The Federal Finance Minister, Johan Van Overtveldt (New Flemish Alliance) wants bailiffs to be able to collect judicial fines, the Het Laaste Nieuws reported on Monday. This comes after a successful test-project in Ghent. The tax department is currently owed unpaid fines amounting to millions of euros. In 2013 and 2014, more than 293 million euros in fines was not collected. To accelerate the recovery process, the tax department used Ghent to test a system that involved using bailiffs to collect the money from those not paying.

Seeing as the project was a success, the system will be put in place for the whole country. This will happen “during the third trimester”, the minister said.
