Traffic jams are expensive for society

Traffic jams cost society around 600,928 euros per day, according to figures drawn up by Sven Maerivoet, a Transport and Mobility researcher in Louvain. The figures were relayed by De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad and Le Soir. “For each car stuck in a traffic jam, society loses 10.58 euros an hour. It’s time a motorist can’t dedicate to their job or other activities”, the researcher said.

This amount goes up to 36.37 euros an hour when a truck is delayed. “This is because you need to take into account the driver’s salary and the fact that the merchandise being transported gets to the client late”, he adds.

According to the researcher, traffic jams cost as much 3 million euros a day when traffic is really dense.
