The army wants three tanker planes, which could cost 840 million euros

The Belgian army wants to buy three tanker planes, one in 2025 and two more in 2030, according to a plan drawn up by the Defense minister Steven Vandeput (New Flemish Alliance). He is currently discussing this plan with his government partners, L’Echo and De Tijd reported on Wednesday. The planes could cost 280 million euros each, a total of 840 million euros. They planes in question are MRTT aircraft (Multirole Tanker Transport), made by Airbus. They allow planes to refuel while still in the air. This purchase would be part of a military cooperation project created within the EU, the European Defense Agency, whose objective is to give the EU in-flight refuel capability.

They are also thinking of buying refueling kits for A400M transport planes. This would make the total bill 1 billion euros.
