Leonardo da Vinci secondary school – Council of State suspends the suspension of professor of Islam

The Council of State has interrupted the 3-month preventive suspension by Education minister of the Wallonia-Brussels federation Joelle Milquet, of the professor of Islam at the Leonardo da Vinci secondary school in Anderlecht, it was revealed on Friday. Yacob Mahi is suspected of “abusing” some of his students. The facts appeared incidentally during an investigation led by the authorities in February/March, into a fight between students of the school which took place in January. Following the prefects’ report, the teacher was heard by the minister on March 30th. The result was that the minister decided to bring civil proceedings and press criminal charges.

Furthermore the professor of Islam was “suspended preventively” for 3 months (renewable), which he appealed against on an emergency basis. A judgement handed down by the Council of State on Friday suspends the implementation of this measure. It also states that “the request by the French-speaking community to balance competing interests in this case does not apply.”
