Facebook representatives go before the Privacy Commission

Representatives for the social media network Facebook appeared before the Commission for the Protection of Privacy during a meeting on Wednesday. The Commission is currently looking at Facebook’s new conditions of use, which could violate user’s privacy. The Commission will publish its recommendations on the 13th of May, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.  During the meeting, two subjects were dealt with: the application of Belgian law on privacy and what the Privacy Commission can do about the way Facebook handles personal data. The Commission also discussed the social plug-ins that Facebook offers to external parties, which allow it to also follow non-users.

At the Privacy Commission’s request, a research unit from KU Leuven and the VUB analysed Facebook’s new conditions of use. This unit said the new conditions violate European legislation.
