An international inquiry has placed Belgium 7th out of 38 countries for migrant integration policies. This is a similar score to 2011, but there are weaknesses in employment, political participation and health care, Le Soir reported on Thursday. The Mipex inquiry, “Migrant Integration Policy Index”, is financed by Europe, and looks at integration policies in 38 countries. Even though Belgium appears to do well, it falls down on migrant’s access to the job market, and their mobility within it. Structural obstacles block people from other countries finding jobs.

It does worst on health care: the “specific needs” of foreign populations are not taken into account by the policies currently in place. Belgium is also weak on migrant political participation: they can only vote in local elections.
