The Ghent mayor, Daniël Termont, (Socialist) underwent an operation for intestinal cancer on Tuesday. This was announced by the head of his cabinet, Claude Beernaert. He will be absent for 5 to 6 weeks, and will be replaced by the head councillor, Mathias De Clercq (Opend Vld) during this time. “As mayor, I am a public figure, elected by Ghent residents to serve them. I therefore think they have the right to know why I will be absent. They do not need to worry: my colleagues are continuing work on all the current projects. Work on the secondary school will also continue”, Daniël Termont said in a brief written statement. The head of his cabinet said the operation went well.
