A majority of the communes in the Dutch Limburg province are expected to adopt motions calling for the closure of the Belgian Tihange nuclear plant. This was reported by the 1Limburg internet site on Tuesday. The nuclear plant is 75 kilometres from the province’s main towns: Maastricht, Sittard-Geleen and Heerlen. The communes say they are worried about the plant’s condition. Cracks were discovered and no decision has yet been made about renovating the plant, they say. “If there is an incident, the owner, Electrabel, is only planning to give iodine tablets to those living within 100 kilometres of the plant, which is not enough”, the Limburg authorities say. Several towns have therefore requested a motion calling for the immediate and definitive closure of the Tihange plant be discussed at their next town council meeting. The Maastricht town council will discuss the issue on Tuesday evening.
