Voluntary military service flops

Three quarters of recruits that go into the army as volunteers don’t see their commitment through, according to the CGSP Union. Between 2010 and 2013, 73.18% of the 216 people who joined up left early. They left before the end of their training, La Libre Belgique explained on Wednesday. The current Minister Steven Vandeput recently said that in five years, 2010 to 2014, 348 people joined up. That’s a lot less than the 840 places available during that period, the paper says. According to the Minister, 201 recruits “left early, before the end of their training”.

The difference in the two sets of figures does not change the fact that voluntary military service is a failure. “It was foreseeable”, says the CGSP’s Patrick Descy. “As volunteers, young people only learn how to hold a gun. They don’t get any extra training (in mechanics, for example). This means that when they leave the army, they have nothing to show future employers”.
