The tax department is hunting fraudsters on Airbnb

Individuals who put an apartment to rent on the website Airbnb will be investigated by the tax department. Often, the site’s users don’t declare the income they get from renting their property, De Morgen reported on Saturday. Airbnb is more present than ever in Belgium. Many people, mainly in Ghent, Antwerp, and Brussels, put rooms or entire properties to rent on the site. They charge between 30 and 100 euros a night.

In most cases, the owners don’t declare this income, even though the law obliges them to.

This is why the Belgian Internet Service Centre (Bisc), part of the Tax Special Inspection Unit (ISI), is hunting fraudsters on property rental sites like Airbnb or 9Flats.

The Finance SPF has no figures on the possible number of fraudsters.
