Nearly 300 unregistered people march to Charles Michel’s commune

Around 300 unregistered people marched to Wavre, the Prime Minister’s commune, at around 11am on Saturday. They were protesting against Belgium’s immigration policy, and asking for more clarity on unregistered people’s situation. The march’s estimated arrival time was around 6.30pm, at the Wavre Communal House. The protesters will pass by Watermael-Boitsfort and go through Soignes Forest to get to Wavre. They hope to find the Prime Minister there. “We hope he will be home. But we know he is under pressure. It’s not easy to govern a country”, explains Hamid, one of the march’s participants He has been living unregistered in Belgium since 2002. “If he is not there today, we hope that he will pass on our message to Theo Francken, the State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration”, said another protester.

The organisation is requesting all unregistered people in Belgium be made legal. According to estimations, this concerns between 100,000 and 150,000 people. Other requests are the closure of detention centres, freedom of movement, an immediate stop to deportations, and the right to education and healthcare.
