The vehicle tests in Belgium are too slow, too expensive and can cause damage

A vehicle test should be less expensive and quicker. In Belgium, taking the test is up to twice as expensive as in neighbouring countries. Waiting times are too long, and emission tests sometimes damage vehicles, according to the Flemish drivers association VAB. It has compared practices in different countries, the Het Laaste Niews and De Morgen reported on Tuesday.

Nearly half of Flemish people have to wait 20 minutes to an hour for the test. “That’s too long”, says Maarten Matienko, the VAB spokesman. “There are also not enough test centres: Belgium only has 77. The Netherlands has 9,500. Our northern neighbours test 6.7 million vehicles, double our figure”.

VAB thinks Belgium should look at opening up the vehicle test market. This would allow more test centres to be built, and make the tests cheaper. The VAB also says that emission tests sometimes damage vehicles.
