Bus crash in Middelkerke: no technical problem with vehicle

An expert has been unable to find any technical issue on the wreck of the bus involved in an accident on the E40 near Middelkerke on Sunday, revealed the Bruges antenna of the West Flanders prosecutor’s office. The driver of the vehicle is being questioned by investigators. The British bus left Brentwood (South-East England) on Sunday morning with 34 school children on board, heading for the German amusement park Phantasialand (West).

The bus left the road at 9:48am, and crashed into the pillar of a bridge. The relief driver died instantly. The driver and 2 children were taken to hospital with serious injuries. All the other passengers suffered minor injuries or were unharmed.

The prosecutor immediately sent an expert on site to assess the precise circumstances of the accident. According to his report, the bus had no technical problems. The investigation is still open, and amongst other things the driver of the Northern Irish coach company is being questioned.
