The number of cases involving possession of cannabis rose from 21,000 to 30,000 in Belgium between 2012 and 2014, an increase of over 40%. The number of recorded incidents doubled over 10 years, points out the daily La Dernière Heure on Friday. At the same time, the number of instances of cannabis being sold went from approximately 4,000 to 5,000, up 20% in 2 years. These figures relate to marijuana and not cannabis resin.
The new arrests are mostly due to the activity of Antwerp, Brussels, and Liège police forces, with cumulative offenses of selling and possessing rocketing, going up by as much as 45%.
This is an “all-time high” according to Michel Bruneau, federal police commissioner, narcotics department.
