Antwerp port to take part in Baku port development

The port of Antwerp is tosupport the Azeri capital Baku in its efforts to develop its port infrastructure. Baku is on the Caspian Sea and will become “an important landmark in the newly developed overland “Silk Road” which should go from China to Europe,” explain Antwerp port authorities on Thursday. The management of “Baku International Sea Trade Port” signed an agreement with “Port of Antwerp International” and with “Antwerp Port Training Center”, 2 subsidiaries of the Antwerp port authorities, and they will implement practices, training, and support for the development of the Caucasian port.

Building work started on the International Sea Trade Port in 2010. In the initial stage, Azeri authorities plan to increase traffic to10 million tons and 50,000 containers per year. The second stage will see them targeting 17 million tons and 150,000 containers with the aim of finally reaching a yearly target of 25 million tons and a million containers.
