Nearly 420,000 guns registered in Belgium

There are currently 426,939 guns registered in Belgium, which are owned by 108,579 people, according to the 2006 census. That census was done just after the Onkelinx law came in, which says people who own guns have to register them, the Sudpresse papers reported on Monday. Authorities hand out around 27,500 permits every year. The most heavily armed provinces are Hainaut (53,782), Liège (53,624), and Antwerp (50,862). Liège has the highest number of gun holders with 15,431, followed by Eastern Flanders (14,326), and Hainaut (13,976). Permits are mainly given for hunting (149,291, 35% in total), recreational shooting (116,969) and sports shooting (61,023).
