West Rim, a young group from Ghent, will play in the famous Saint Peter’s Square in Rome, in front of Pope Francis and thousands of young people. The performance will be part of an international child’s choir pilgrimage, which the Italian capital will host from the 3rd to the 8th of August. The five members of the pop-folk group will play at 4.40 for the Pope’s arrival, according to their Facebook page. More than 10,000 acolytes from all over Europe, including 160 Belgians, are on their way to Rome as part of an initiative by the association Coetus Internationalis Ministrantium. Tuesday’s meeting with the Pope is one of the highlights of the program. The whole event will be broadcast on Radio Vatican, and the members of West Rim will be interviewed about the meaning of their song lyrics.
The group describes their music as “modern-folk”, and list Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling and Beirut among their inspirations. Bagpipes and the diatonic accordion are among their main instruments.
The bishop of Zrenjznin, in Serbia, heard about West Rim and wanted the group to play at the Vatican.
