Explosion at the GSK site in Rixensart: the victim has died

The production technician who was seriously injured at the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) site in Rixensart on Tuesday afternoon died in hospital that evening, the company’s spokesman told the Belga agency.
A fuel boiler exploding caused an accident at GSK’s Rixensart site. It happened a little before 4.50pm on Tuesday. “It happened during the maintenance of several boilers located outside the production buildings”, a GSK spokesman explained. There was a lot of projected debris, which seriously injured a production technician working nearby.

The victim was taken to the Saint-Pierre clinic in Ottignies at around 6.30 on Tuesday, but he died later that evening. He was 24, and lived in the Walloon Brabant.

Three other members of staff who were in a state of shock were treated at the site’s infirmary. “We will do everything we can to cooperate with the investigation and make sure this kind of tragedy doesn’t happen again”, said a GSK manager.

An empty building nearby was slightly damaged. The GSK spokesman said the accident will have no impact on the environment or production.
