Etterbeek: 8 gold and silver coins stolen from collection

8 gold and silver coins valued at approximately several thousand euros were stolen from the home of a collector in Etterbeek on July 29th. One of the stolen coins represents Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of the European Union, and is extremely rare as only 40 were minted in 1986, added its owner, an EU historian, on Thursday. The burglary took place shortly before midnight at the victim’s home in Etterbeek. 2 gold and 6 silver coins were stolen. “In particular, a 3-cm diameter gold coin with an inscription saying ‘1,000 ECU’ was stolen.

It represents Robert Schuman’s profile and the coats of arms of the then 12 member states. The back shows the abduction of Europa by Zeus who has taken the form of a bull, a scene from Greek mythology. The coin is extremely rare, only 40 being minted in 1986,” added the victim.

“The silver coins stolen represented the founding fathers of the European Union. The exact value of the theft has yet to be ascertained but it is likely to be in the thousands of euros,” she added.

Local police announced on Thursday that the investigation is still underway.
