More police are injured doing sport than on the job

A police report shows that more than 1 work accident in 5 involving a Federal police officer happens during sports activities or training, the Mediahuis papers say. In total, there were 1,523 accidents recorded in a year, 347 of which occurred during sports activities or training. There were 275 accidents during police interventions.

These surprising figures are not so surprising to Unionist Vincent Houssin from the SLFP. He thinks the police do not do enough for officers who do a lot of sport so they can be in good condition for the field. “We have already told the Home Affairs Ministry that we need better adapted sports facilities, but nothing has been done”, he says.

In total, the Federal police lost 30,810 working days in one year, which cost around 7.2 million Euros.
