Infrabel sounds the alarm: there are children on the tracks every day

Last year, Infrabel, the railway network manager, dealt with 45 incidents where people were on or near railway tracks. This trend is increasing, the Het Laatste Nieuws, De Morgen and La Dernière Heure reported on Monday. It has increased by 20% compared to July 2014, La Dernière Heure claims. There were 6,204 minutes of delays, nearly 3 hours, because of people “trespassing” during just the first month of summer. “We have noticed that during the summer, these incidents are mainly children playing on the tracks. You’d never let your children pay on the motorway, so why would you let them play on railway tracks, it’s just as dangerous”, an Infrabel spokesman said.

It can cost the people found on or near the tracks a lot, as the SNCB can give then a 3,000 euro fine and claim 89 euros for each minute of delay.
