The Special Tax Inspection Department (ISI) has set up an early-warning VAT roundabout detection system in Greece. Greece loses up to a billion dollars a year due to this type of fraud, L’Echo reported on Thursday.
“The Greek government was in over their heads. The technique they were using did not allow them to detect this type of fraud”, says Yannic Hulot, ISI director. The ISI unit specialises in tracking VAT fraud.
While in Athens, the Belgian experts looked at the Greek data and found around fifty cases of fraud, which impressed the Greeks. The Greek government has now created a team equivalent to the ISI.
