Farmers’ Protest: European Commission unfreezes 500 million euros of emergency aid

The European Commission announced on Monday, during a Ministerial Council of the EU, that it was unfreezing 500 million euros of emergency aid for farmers, and dairy farmers in particular.

The Council was convened in Brussels in response to the current crisis spreading throughout the agricultural world.

“The Commission will recommend that the most significant part of this package be supplied to all member states in the form of a financial envelope for each state to support the dairy sector,” stated the Brussels executive in a statement.

As Phil Hogan, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture, was ill, the Vice-President, EU Commissioner for Investment, Jyrki Katainen, presented this measure to European agriculture ministers. “This response is proof that the Commission takes its responsibility to farmers very seriously,” he affirmed.

In spite of traffic congestion around the Rond-point Schuman (the so-called Schuman roundabout), the meeting started shortly after 2.45p.m. Willy Borsus, Belgium’s Federal Agriculture Minister represented the country at the meeting.
