The diesel engine hacking scandal involving Volkswagen will also have consequences in Belgium. “500,000 Belgian cars could be affected”, Economy Minister Kris Peeters told De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws.

“In total, there are 500,000 vehicles in Belgium equipped with the engine that can be hacked”, explained the deputy Prime-Minister. They are Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat cars. “The exact number of engines with the hacked anti-pollution software is not yet known. I have asked VW to give me more information on the subject, and the damages envisaged. The Economy SPF is also doing a judicial analysis of the situation”, said Mr Peeters.

The impact on Belgium could be particularly big, as diesel cars are very popular here.
