Mons University (UMons) honoured the French economist Daniel Cohen during its academic return for the year 2015-2016. He was given a Honoris Causa doctorate.
The French economist, who specialises in the sovereign debt, was honoured by the UMons authorities On Friday. He was given a Honoris Causa doctorate during the ceremony marking the Mons University’s academic return for the year 2015-2016.
A professor at the Ecole normale supérieure and a founding member of the Ecole d’économie de Paris, Daniel Cohen has published numerous books on Economy, including “Homo economicus, prophète (égaré) des temps nouveaux”, which won the Economy book prize in 2012. In his latest work, published in August 2015, “The world is closed and desire infinite”, Daniel Cohen says “the belief that progress is eternal is dwindling, or in any case progress is becoming a threat to employment”. The economist also questions if we can live without growth in the West. He asks the essential question about wealth redistribution in a world where everyone must find their place.
Last year, the academic return fell under the umbrella of the European Capital of Culture “Mons 2015”. Six renowned Belgian artists, Salvatore Adamo, Michèle Anne De Mey, Yolande Moreau, Panamarenko, Henri Van Herwegen, François Schuiten and Jean-Philippe Toussaint, were given Honoris Causa doctorates.
