Asylum seekers: racist graffiti in Vilvorde to oppose the opening of a welcome centre

Racist and anti-Islam slogans were sprayed onto different buildings in Vilvorde on Friday night, due to a welcome centre for asylum seekers opening in the Brabançon commune on Wednesday. This is according to the local mayor Hans Bonte (Socialist party).

A banner saying “Refugees not welcome”” was put up at the Asiat site, which could house up to 124 refugees.

The walls of the Town Hall were also covered with the slogan “Islam buiten” and a swastika. Graffiti criticizing socialism was found on the FGTB building.

The mayor asked for these hateful messages to be cleaned off as quickly as possible, and for an investigation to be opened to find those responsible.
