First Syrian family accommodated by Belgian family says thank you to Belgium

The civic platform in support of refugees introduced the first Syrian family to be welcomed by a Belgian family on September 18th, the very same day they arrived in Brussels, late on Sunday. Lattifa, a certified fitness coach, and Abdelrazzak, a carpenter, come from Alep. They arrived with their 3 children Farah (10), Ahmed (8) and Hala (6). Lattifa expressed her gratitude to Belgian families taking in refugees: “Thank you to Belgium and to Belgians for opening their doors to people they have never met, and helping them.” She is hoping her children can go to school in Belgium.

The family is currently staying at the Hasselt refugee centre, after spending their reception period in a furnished flat in Schaerbeek, just below the home of its owner 72-year-old Marcelle: “These people are fleeing war zones. They were not starving in their own country, they are middle-class. They had jobs, a car, a home… I want to tell Belgians not to hesitate, just open your hearts for the time it takes the authorities to solve the problem.”
