Over 285,000 lab animals used for Walloon research in 2014

286,252 animals were used in Walloon research labs in 2014, according to figures released by the Walloon Ministry of Agriculture, and published by newspapers from Sudpresse group on Friday. Most of these animals are rodents. 178,881 rodents were used in Walloon labs last year. They represent 62.5% of the 286,252 animals used in 2014, followed by fish (61,580) and rabbits (42,716).

Farm animals (cows, pigs, donkeys, goats…1,432) are also used, as are birds (1,229), amphibians and reptiles (337), cats and dogs (30 and 31) and even llamas (16) which the University of Liège started using just recently.
