King Philippe, Honorary President of the 150-year Belgian-Japanese Friendship

Belgium and Japan will celebrate their 150-year friendship next year. Indeed 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Emperor Akihito of Japan and King Philippe will be honorary presidents of this century and a half friendship, the Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs indicated on Wednesday.

Diplomatic relations between Belgium and Japan were established on August 1st, 1886, with the signing of a Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation.

Both countries, eager to strengthen their bilateral relationship, will celebrate the 150th anniversary from December 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2016 through various commemorative events – political, economic, cultural… These events will involve the participation of various institutions, firms, academic institutes, associations and citizens of both countries.
