Asylum applications - Pegida announces Friday protest against migrants in Termonde

The right-wing extremist group, Pegida Vlaanderen, has announced there will be a demonstration next Friday to protest against the continued arrival of asylum seekers in Termonde (Eastern Flanders). This information was broadcast by local TV station TV Oost and was confirmed by the Termonde authorities.

A former boarding school in Termonde is destined to become a holding centre for 144 asylum seekers, many of whom will be unaccompanied minors.

Pegida is staunchly against the centre and was given authorisation to mount a protest in front of the building on Friday at 7.30pm. This islamophobic group previously also launched a protest in September at the Westakkers military grounds in Saint-Nicolas, again opposing the setting up of a migrant holding centre. The demonstration was attended by about 200 people and was held without incident.
