All the people injured in the accident involving a car and several pedestrians near Courtrai are out of danger, according to the Courtrai division of the Eastern Flanders Prosecutor’s office. A car hit a group of pedestrians in Marke on Sunday morning, killing two people and injuring 11.
At around 10am on Sunday, the vehicle came off its trajectory and hit a group of pedestrians on the pavement. The car eventually hit the front of a house, 150m further on.
An 87 year old man died at the scene, and a 67 year old man died at Courtrai hospital. Four of the eleven injured have been able to go home. The others are still in hospital, but out of danger.
The theory is that the driver of the vehicle had a funny turn, as witnesses saw the 53 year old man’s head resting on the steering wheel. Preliminary tests have shown he wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
