Federal Parliament: Veterans and youths remember World Wars

Four hundred veterans and 10-to-12-year-olds from every region commemorated the two World Wars at the federal Parliament on Wednesday. The children laid a wreath at the Unknown Soldier Memorial with Senate President Christine Defraigne and Lower House President Siegfried Bracke.

Youths and veterans heard a presentation on German behaviour during the 2 wars and German attitude to remembrance after the wars by Laurence Van Ypersele, from the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL) at the Lower House. At the Senate, Kathollieke Hogeschool Vives student teachers had organised a performance evoking World War 1 along with an exhibition about the 1914-1918 Resistance by Emmanuel Debruyn (UCL) and testimonials from Thierry Coppieters 't Wallant about his childhood during WWII. Children also read testimonies from other children during WWI. The commemoration ceremony which has been taking place for several years now, is included in the remembrance curriculum for schools offered by the Parliament.
