Dearth of police salivary tests for drugs testing

Several large police zones in Belgium, such as Antwerp and Hasselt for example, complain of not having enough salivary tests to continue with drugs testing until the end of the year, although the Bob campaign (annual drink-driving awareness campaign) has only just started, reveal the dailies La Dernière Heure, De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws on Wednesday. The Bob campaign ends on January 25th, “but we only have enough tests for one more weekend. Road safety is supposedly a priority so we must be given the means for prevention,” comments the Chief of Hasselt police zone, Philip Pirard.

Funds budgeted for these tests have all been spent. The same problem has arisen at the end of every year since the tests were introduced in 2010. The Ministry of Justice explains that the initial budget of 150,000 euros has already been raised by 25,000 euros.
