Number of fines for using mobile phone while driving is booming

Last year, 121,324 drivers received a fine for using their mobile phone while driving, according to figures from the National General Database (BNG) from the police. The Interior Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) has submitted the numbers to the CD&V parliamentary Jef van den Bergh. The number of fines for such offenses has increased by 2,683 units compared to 2013, wrote Gazet van Antwerpen on Monday.

Car drivers (71,275) are the most likely to have been caught on the phone while driving, ahead of small lorries drivers (26,284) and lorries drivers (6,678). 594 cyclists and 509 bus drivers have also received fines.

The Interior Minister wants to strengthen controls. The federal services are studying the idea of controlling mobile phones after each accident.
