A total of 170 million euros allocated to renovating roads in Walloon communities remain idle in local accounts, reveals research by the Walloon Federation of Road Construction Contractors published by daily La Dernière Heure on Thursday. Over two thirds of towns in the south of the country have failed to launch renovation work to improve roads since 2013.
The total amount is the sum of subsidies paid by the Communal Investment Fund in 2014. The money allocated is only supposed to cover half of total costs, with local authorities paying the rest. Walloon towns are loath to spend their own funds as they want to balance their budgets.
