Terrorist threat - one suspect under arrest denies all involvement in preparing for attacks

27-year-old Mohammed Karay, one of the suspects placed under arrest after several searches were carried out as part of a terrorism investigation, which is not linked to the Paris attacks, disputes the allegations being made against him and contends that he has never been radicalised, indicated his lawyer Maître Xavier Carette, who also points out that his client has no criminal record. The investigation has highlighted the serious threat of attacks which were allegedly intended for several significant Brussels locations during the New Year celebrations.

Amongst the six individuals detained during the searches which took place last Sunday and Monday in the Brussels region, in Flemish Brabant and in the Liège region, two people were arrested. According to the Federal Prosecutor's office, “the first was placed under arrest for leading terrorist threats, participating in terrorist group activities as both a leader and recruiter with a view to committing terrorist offences, as a perpetrator or co-perpetrator. The second was arrested for leading terrorist threats and participating in terrorist activities as a perpetrator or co-perpetrator.” The four other individuals originally detained were released.
